Do the "Happy Dance of Freedom from Debt" in January! Save for Gifts All Year Round

Writing things down doesn’t just help you remember, it makes your mind more efficient by helping you focus on the important changes you truly want to make like saving to pay for 2022 Christmas. You could enjoy the Holiday Season, avoid debt and do the "happy dance of freedom". Let’s get started!

Step 1

Rather than waiting until the last minute to buy important gifts for your friends and family—whether it's a birthday, shower, anniversary, stag, sympathy flowers, you name it—you need to be saving for these expenses every month. You know they're coming, so it's important to budget for these ongoing costs. Write down who will receive gifts in 2022 including Christmas, total it up and add a bit for a cushion. NOW divide it by the number of paychecks you receive in a year. This is what you are going to save every paycheck.

Step 2

Open a savings account with no fees for 1 or 2 withdrawals and start an automatic transfer from your bank account on the day your paycheck lands for the amount, you calculated in step1, into this new savings account. This is only for those listed gift occasions and Christmas.

Step 3

In reality this is a process that takes practice. For instance your budget could be off, you might have more events than your planned, etc. BUT it gets you started and takes the edge off. If you splurged add a bit more to catch up.

Tip: Your Christmas budget would include more than just gifts (Free Download below ).

The National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioural Modification neuropsychologists have identified the “generation effect” that says individuals demonstrate better memory for material they’ve generated themselves, not just read, heard or seen on a screen. A lot of cognitive processing takes place. You reinforce what is important to you and you won’t forget. The process is easy and has several benefits:

  1. Create a picture in your mind,

  2. Enjoy the endorphins of envisioning the goal,

  3. Write down details, specific parameters, costs, etc. you’re reprocessing and clarifying what you need to do,

  4. You are taking more time which helps you make better decisions,

  5. The image is now imprinted in your mind, like stamping concrete.

According to Mark Murphy, Senior Contributor, Forbes, “Vividly describing your goals in written form is strongly associated with goal success, and people who very vividly describe or picture their goals are anywhere from 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish their goals than people who don’t. That’s a pretty big difference in goal achievement just from writing your goals on a piece of paper.”
